The Story
"Shadows of Pompeii" is a full-length, fully-staged workshop production of a dramatic new musical that that tells a story of a young female artist's who seeks to express herself despite restrictions from the Roman Empire as Mt. Vesuvius looms in the background.
Lila is a secret partner with Julius, who has become a sensation for his unusual murals that are filling the homes of wealthy Pompeii ciitizens. One of his partrons, Cicero, commissions his to paint a mural for the new governor of the province, Tiberius. With his wife, Livia, Tiberius attends the unveiling of his mural and is shocked to see himself portrayed as a commoner. To further complicate the situation, Lila steps forward and publicly argues with Tiberius. Embarrassed in front of his new subjects, he detains Lila, Julius and Cicero while he considers what punishment is warranted.
Victor, a suitor to Lila, convinces Livia to have Tiberius' portrait painted. Tiberius, the tough soldier turned governor, and Lila, the impassioned painter, realize they have more in common than sitting across from each other while a portrait is painted.
As the story progresses, Mt. Vesuvius slowly rumbles. The passions and desires of the characters are amplified as they are pressed into quick decision about their future.
Although "Shadows of Pompeii", is set during the Roman Empire, it's a compelling story of passion that echoes modern times.
